GIOVANNI STRADONE "... The most typical and consistent representative of Italian expressionism" (Lionello Venturi)

LIVES IN ROME ALL HIS PICTORIAL CAREER BEGAN AT THE SCHOOL OF FERRUCCIO FERRAZZI. ROUGH CHARACTER, HE MAKES CARICATURES OF HIS ANTAGONISTS AND/OR DETRACTORS AND OF RENOWNED CHARACTERS: THE CRITIC  GIULIO CARLO ARGAN, PALMA BUCARELLI, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, THE PAINTER MACCARI.

IN HIS ARTISTIC CAREER, HE HAS AS FELLOW TRAVELERS: THE PAINTING, THE INTEREST IN INSECTS THAT HE BREEDS AT HOME, THE BICYCLE, MANY IMPORTANT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CRITICS WHO APPRECIATED HIS WORK BUT WHO WERE MORE DEVOTED TO FIND HIM A PLACE IN THE NATIONAL PICTORIAL TRENDS THAN TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF RESEARCH AND OF HIS PAINTING IN AN INTERNATIONAL ART WORLD AS HE DESERVED.

CESARE BRANDI, IN THE PRESENTATION OF THE SOLO EXHIBITION AT THE “Attico-Esse arte” GALLERY, DEFINES HIS WORKS: “Paintings that leave you speechless, that almost can't be dated …”; E. CRISPOLTI ADDS: “a constant of painting of Stradone is certainly the reduction of the image to its limit of presence, you could say of figurability … it might have been quite easy for Stradone to exceed the limit of reduction of the image … in order to open at a writing free of references to figures … but he never wanted to do it, as well as De Pisis, in order to stay within the borders of an interior domain”. 

G. DE CHIRICO (IN 1964  - ONLY TIME IN HIS LIFE IN WHICH HE PRESENTS THE BIOGRAPHY OF AN ARTIST) DEFINES SO THE WORK OF STRADONE: “a painting of maximum tension, where everything is expressed and everything still seems to be expressed …”. 

VIRGILIO GUZZI IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CONNECTS STRADONE TO THE INFORMAL ARTISTS AS FAUTRIER AND DUBUFFET AND ALSO MORLOTTI, DE KOONING, J. JORN AND OTHERS OF THE COBRA GROUP OF COMMON EXPRESSIONIST ORIGIN. 

IN 1942, HE IS THIRD AT THE “Premio Bergamo” AFTER GUTTUSO E MENZIO, BUT BEFORE BIROLLI.

IN 1947, CESARE BRANDI SHOWS “I quattro fuori strada: Ciarrocchi, Sadun, Scialoja, Stradone”, THE FOUR PAINTERS WHO HAD NOT JOINED THE NASCENT ABSTRACTIONISM. 

IN 1948, FIRST PRIZE ON THE OCCASION OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN LONDON, WITH THE WORK “Fausto Coppi” HE GAINS INTERNATIONAL FAME. 

IN 1950, HE IS INVITED TO THE “Biennale di Venezia” AND HIS WORK “Apoteosi di Bartali” IS WITHDRAWN BECAUSE IT CONTAINS CARICATURES OF POLITICAL FIGURES OF THE TIME.

SINCE 1968, AMONG OTHER IMPORTANT EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS, HE EXHIBITS AT THE “Attico-esse arte” GALLERY OF BRUNO SARGENTINI, WHO PRESENTS HIS WORKS IN THE EXHIBITIONS OF 1968, “Mafai, Scipione, Stradone”, OF 1973, “Stradone opere dal 1943 al 1971” AND OF 1982 (STRADONE DIES IN 1981), “Antologica prima da collezione”, WITH THE COMMITMENT TO REALIZE THE “Catalogo Generale”.    

CESARE VIVALDI (MAYBE FORGETTING THAT THIS WAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO BALLA, A NAME AMONG THE MANY) WRITES: “It seems incredible that a painter like Stradone, among the best of his generation and one of the most admired of the 40s/50s, appears today almost a stranger”; IN A SIMPLISTIC AND SUPERFICIAL WAY, HE SHOWS AS JUSTIFICATION THE GRUMPINESS OF THE CHARACTER OF STRADONE, HIS TROUBLED EXPERIENCE AND A PAINFUL LONELINESS.

THE MOTIVATION MUST BE SOUGHT IN THE FACT THAT CRITICS HAVE CONTINUED STUBBORNLY WITH ENDLESS INSIGHTS AIMED TO SEEK ONLY HIS MOST CORRECT POSITION: NEO EXPRESSIONIST, INFORMAL, LAST DESCENDANT OF THE ROMAN SCHOOL OF SCIPIONE AND MAFAI, THING THAT AFTER 35 YEARS PASSED IN TOTAL SILENCE OF THE CRITICS, BY HIS CULTURAL HISTORICIZING.      

DE CHIRICO, HOWEVER, ALREADY IN HIS ESSAY OF 1964, HAD TRIED TO BRING ORDER, NOT TALKING ABOUT RUDENESS OF CHARACTER OR RESTLESS SOLITUDE BUT ABOUT: “ … coloristic passages always amalgamated … and it aims at broadening our horizons ... by showing us something that the mere appearance denies us … and that you have to point out and interpret as a reflection of an indefinite sense of expectation and hope”; ENRICO CRISPOLTI CONCLUDES THUS HIS PRESENTATION OF THE EXHIBITION AT THE Galleria Senior OF 1973: “…the existence tragedy is redeemed ... precisely in the inner evocation and not in a reversal in reality …. because his is still, albeit reflected and spaced apart, the horizontal time of the existence”.

THE PAINTING OF STRADONE IS THEREFORE ALWAYS A PICTORIAL MAGMA WHERE IT ISN'T THE FORM WHICH DISSOLVES IN THE MATTER, BUT EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE: FROM THE PICTORIAL MAGMA, “where - as he says De Chirico - everything is expressed and everything still seems to be expressed”, THE SHAPE, WHEN AND IF IT APPEARS, IS STYLIZED AND/OR DEFORMED, BUT IT IS ALWAYS A RESULT OF A CASUAL FACT AND THE LEVEL OF DEFINITION IS NOT INDISPENSABLE FOR THE COMPLETENESS OF THE WORK.

IN THAT MAGMA AND IN THAT CLOT THERE ARE NEITHER SIRONI AND NOT EVEN THE TONALISM OF MORANDI, BUT MAYBE THE “Otages”  OF J. FAUTRIER AS V. GUZZI SAID.

STRADONE, THEREFORE, ONCE REACHED THE QUALITY OF HIS STYLE, WITH THE DISSOLUTION OR COAGULATION OF THE FIGURES, KEEPS A VIGILANT AND CONSTANT PRESENCE IN REPRESENTING THE CRISIS OF BOURGEOIS VALUES THAT INVOLVES HIS OWN WORLD AND HIS FIGURE OF A MAN AND ARTIST.

STRADONE IS THEREFORE, WITHOUT DOUBT, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITALIAN ARTISTS OF THE '40S /'70S; AN ISOLATED ARTIST, PERHAPS BY THE CRITICS, BUT THAT WITH CONSISTENCY, GREAT INTIMACY AND RESPECT HAS REPRESENTED HIS WORLD, HIS HUMAN DIMENSION AND THE SOCIAL ORIGIN OF HIS CULTURE, WHILE REMAINING CONSISTENT IN HIS PICTORIAL EVOLUTION EVEN WHEN, IN HIS OWN WAY AND WITH HIS PERSONAL INTIMACY, HE SHARED THE OBJECTIONS OF THE STUDENT MOVEMENT OF 1968, WITH WORKS ENTITLED: “La Polis”, “Bivacco vietnamita distrutto”, “La ruota del potere”.    

A NEW READING OF HIS WORK APPEARS THEREFORE NECESSARY, ALSO IN THE LIGHT OF THE SOCIAL EVENTS THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED THE EVOLUTION OF HIS EXPERIENCE, AIMING, WITH THE INVOLVEMENT OF COLLECTORS, GALLERY OWNERS, FOUNDATIONS AND BANKS, AT THE CREATION OF THE “Catalogo Generale dell’opera di G. Stradone”, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE STRADONE FAMILY, THROUGH THE WEBSITE “www.giovannistradone.it”.

THE EXHIBITION WE OFFER, COMPOSED OF 18 OIL PAINTINGS DATED FROM 1938 TO 1971, IS ORGANIZED INTO TWO ROOMS WITH WORKS DISPLAYED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER.
